Nourishing communities

A year and six months ago we embarked on a journey to feed our surrounding communities in Cape Town, at a time when people in our communities were struggling and further impacted by the pandemic. During this time we all felt the need to help our families, friends and people in our communities suffering from unemployment, poverty and not have something to eat.

Despite the inequality in our country the most wealthy and the poorest person were impacted in some way or another. As we reflect, may we realise that life is short and that our circumstances can change at the blink of an eye, one day we may have and it can be taken away at another. May these experiences allow us to be grateful for what we have and appreciate the small yet valuable things in life, as well as realise that sustenance comes only from the Almighty.

Today we fed approximately 2,500 people of the communities of Vrygrond, Steenberg, Hillview, Lavender Hill, Parkwood, Khayelitsha and Ottery. It was amazing listening to the distribution partners speaking about how the community looks forward to receiving our food fourth nightly. We would like to thank the team, volunteers and all the sponsors which allowed this feeding to be successful. May we continue this journey together and grow our community to be instruments that the Almighty uses to sustain people suffering in our communities.

As it is profoundly mentioned, “The nourishment of the body is food, while the nourishment of the souls is feeding others.” May the doors continue open enabling us to feed more people together for many more years.

World Food Day

World Food Day celebrated of 16 October, is not only about celebrating the delicious food that people have the privilege of indulging in, it is more about raising awareness for people who do not have such privileges. Many people all over the world suffer from hunger on a daily basis and many people are subjected to having less than a handful of meals each week. although a starvation is a massive problem in many countries, we do not have to look far as people is as suffering from hunger within our communities. It is therefore important that we need raise awareness and to allow more people to assist people faced with the adversity of hunger.

Statistics in South Africa shows that approximately 14 million people are faced with not having food, either due to not have having access to nutritious food or food not being affordable. Covid has aggravated the hunger crisis, especially impacting young children in our communities. Children who suffer from hunger are at risk of various forms of malnutrition, including stunting, overweight and other deficiencies.

On Wednesday the team in Belhar fed the fire victims in their community. Below are a few pictures of the damages caused by the fire.

Today we fed approximately 2,500 people taking the total mouths fed to date to 65,500 mouths fed to date. We fed the communities of Khayelitsha, Vrygrond, Ottery, Lavender Hill and Parkwood. We would like to thank the Almighty for giving us the strength, the team, volunteers, distribution partners and all the sponsors for your contributions and giving back your time to alleviate hunger in our communities.

We humbly request you to raise awareness with your friends and family in order to allow more people to assist someone in need. By working together as a unit we are able to make a difference in the lives of the people in our communities.

Unity of love

What is meant by Unity of love? When breaking it down, love is considered a language that speaks to oneness, rather than separation. Unity on the other hand, reflects that we are one, interconnected to serve and support humanity. There are similarities between the two, however what stands out is oneness and togetherness.

In Arabic the Almighty goes by the names amongst others, “Al-Wadud” which means the affectionate or the loving and “Al-Ahad” which means “The One” . Is this not a lesson to teach us that we should love & ponder as human kind on these two names of the Almighty? This shows that we should not only believe in one deity, but that we should be united as people to show love and affection for all of humanity.

Yesterday we saw many new & old faces that assisted, and also realised that together with our sponsors, the team, volunteers and distribution partners, that we are buildings a community to work together as one unit for one ultimate purpose despite our different races, cultures or religion. We come together to serve the creation of the Creator, especially those in need due to poverty and inequality in our country.

We managed to feed approximately 2,500 people, in the informal settlements in Athlone and communities of Khayelitsha, Lavender Hill, Vrygrond, Parkwood and Cape Town. How delighted and humbled we were to be providing a warm & nutritious meal to people in need.

As we grow older we realise that small things with great love are more important and powerful than we realise, whether it’s cooking a meal with love, listening to someone’s troubles with an open heart, or going deep in prayer until you connect with the love of the Almighty. In all these acts, we live the love that unites us and through our loving, we nourish life in unseen ways.

We would like to thank our sponsors, the team, distribution partners and volunteers for your support. We appreciate all the support, together we are united to make a difference to those in need.

Water a source of life

Today we faced a significant challenge by not having clean water available for cooking, but through perseverance and planning we did not succumb to this obstacle by cancelling the cooking. Although one takes for granted the blessings we are provided on a daily basis from our Creator, it’s moments like these that makes is reflect on these blessings.

Communities this weekend throughout the Cape Flats are either experiencing low water pressure or no water at all. This has significantly impacted our lives, however as the less fortunate has been impacted by having no water, we raise funds to provide bottled drinking water on the day with their warm meal.

We managed to collect 750 litres in containers for the cooking, which was used to make both soya and lamb Akni. Today we fed 2,000 people of the communities from Khayelitsha, Vrygrond, Egoli and Parkwood, May this food nourish them, provide relief from hunger and fill their minds with positivity.

We would like to thank the team, the sponsors and all those that assisted in this feeding initiative, May your lives be filled with good health and increased blessings.

“Nothing is softer, gentler or even more flexible than water, yet with these characteristics nothing is able to resist it.” May we reflect on our character and become gentle and humble ourselves to assist the impoverished and destitute.

Never a Dhal moment

After a longtime we decided to cook Dhal curry and rice on a cold rainy day, which the people in the communities enjoyed thoroughly. Dhal is a balanced source of protein, carbs and even contains some healthy fat, the nutritional value is great for a healthy diet, therefore nutritional for our guests. How fortunate we were able to cook a hearty meal for the people in the surrounding impoverished communities.

Today we managed to feed approximately 2,500 mouths taking the total mouths fed to 56,850. The food was distributed to the communities of Khayelitsha, Vrygrond, Cape Town CBD, Lavender Hill, Egoli informal settlement and Parkwood. We thank the Almighty, the team, sponsors and everyone for your continued support to have made this feeding possible.

As Mahatma Gandhi said, “There are people in the world so hungry, that God cannot appear to them except in the form of bread”. Together may we continue to provide hope to people suffering from hunger in our communities, being mere instruments used by the Almighty to serve his creation.

Nourishing those in need

As we learn nourishment means eating the food necessary for growth and good health. To us nourishment is not merely food which serves as a fuel, food is also about family and about community, which is cooked with love and shared with people in need. We would like to show our appreciation to our Creator for making today possible, for giving us the strength and for the relationships we build in our communities. Today we served Soya Akni, Lamb Akni and soup to the impoverished, orphaned and destitute, feeding 2,900 people.

We fed the communities of Khayelitsha, Lentegeur, Hillview, Parkwood and Vrygrond. It was so heartwarming providing a warm plate of food to people in our communities. We would like to thank our sponsors and everyone for your support in the preparation, cooking and distribution, without each one of you this would not have been possible.

As the saying goes, “Whatever we plant in our subconscious mind and nourish with repetition and emotion will one day become reality.” May all our efforts in fighting hunger continue for many years and through the mercy of the Almighty may poverty and hunger be eradicated.

Womens Day Sanitary Pad Drive

The Sanitary Pad Drive came about as a result of understanding that women in impoverished areas do not have access to items considered as a basic human right. In an announcement recently it was mentioned that approximately 7 million women in South Africa does not have access and cannot afford to buy sanitary pads. It is alarming that globally the World Bank estimates that at least 500 million women lack access to facilities to manage their menstruation, this has been named period poverty.

In Africa, 1 in 10 women miss school on a daily basis and many women make use of unhygienic methods to manage their menstruation. This is a significant issue not only does this cause harm to one’s health but also prevent women from going to school. Education is required to assist people facing the adversity of poverty, therefore we realised the need for providing sanitary pads.

Despite setting a target of a mere 0,02% of South Africa’s need being 2,000 sanitary pad packs, we also understand that this small contribution my assist women in impoverished communities. We managed to collect 2,578 (130% of target) sanitary pad packs through the mercy of the Almighty and each of your support in making this possible.

We have been afforded the opportunity to distribute these sanitary pads to schools in Lotus River and Lavender Hill, to the Vrygrond Community as well as to women homes in our surrounding communities. We aimed to allocate these packs to 1,300 women to provide them with comfort and proper hygiene for at least two months.

To all the women, hope you having an enjoyable Women’s Day and remember that being a woman is your superpower.

See below a few pics of the Sanitary Drive. Pics to be uploaded as sanitary pads is distributed. Thanks to all the sponsors for your support, it is appreciated.

Milestone of 50,000 meals

We thank the Almighty for opening our eyes to assisting those in our communities in need and to be a channel that people can use to give back to the impoverished and destitute. What a journey it has been this far, we are extremely humbled by the many people that have assisted in contributing towards all our initiatives. We thank each and everyone of our sponsors, the team and the people in the communities assisting us with distribution, without each one of you this milestone would not have been possible to achieve. May each of you be blessed with good health, increased wealth in order that we together can continue this journey together for many years.

As we look back at each initiative, many times we have stretched ourselves with a target thinking it’s impossible, yet every time we are amazed by how things just come together in the end. It is so true that a good intention is key to obtaining the assistance we always need from the Almighty. As the saying goes we do our best and the Almighty does the rest.

Yesterday we fed 2,500 people in the communities of Delft, Manenberg, Lavender Hill, Pooke Road and the Vlei informal settlements, as well as Khayelitsha and Vrygrond taking the total mouths fed to date to 51,450.

As Nelson Mandela said, “Poverty is not an accident, like slavery and apartheid it is man-made and can be removed by actions of human beings.” May our community that we built continue to grow despite all the challenges we may face in our country and provide hope to people suffering from the adversity of poverty on a daily basis.

We humbly thank each one of you for your support, together we can achieve more. See below some pictures of yesterdays feeding.

Mandela Day initiative

Mandela Day celebrated on the 18 July this month is a day dedicated to the legacy of the late, great Nelson Mandela who was a civil rights leader and South Africa’s first black president. The spirit of Mandela Day is all about taking action, inspiring change and making a difference in our communities!

“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is the difference we made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead” – Nelson Mandela. This quote is inspiring as it shows the importance of how we should strive to make a difference in our communities by fighting to alleviate hunger, providing hope to people in a state of hopelessness and to empower people to make a meaningful impact in our communities.

We continued our journey with Ayo Technology Solutions Limited this month to provide food to 2,000 people in Parkwood and Prestwich Primary School. The school has 720 learners, of which approximately 90% of the learners come from informal settlements and travel to school on a daily basis to seek education. We wanted to celebrate their efforts persevering on a daily basis, trying to overcome the adversity of poverty through education.

We were fortunate not only to feed the learners and teachers, but their parents and the surrounding residents living along the streets in tents. How humbled we were providing a plate of warm nutritious food to our guests. We would like to thank Ayo Technology Solutions Limited for taking this step and for their support in making this possible, with partnerships like these we can make a difference in our communities. With Unity there is strength and together we can achieve more.

Unity is strength

This week we experienced something beyond our imagination, how nothing in life is by mere chance even people we meet along the way. Do we ever ponder and think how we came alone in this world, how we meet many people within our lives, yet we will leave this world alone? Who we meet in our lives is therefore not by mere chance, it is part of the blessings of the Almighty for us to reflect, draw lessons from their wisdom and build a relationship which benefits ourselves and our communities. However, when depart from this world alone, our actions, the relationships we built and the hearts we touched will continue to echo long after we are gone.

When people come together, we are able to achieve things, that which we thought was initially impossible. This is the beauty of the Almighty, blessing us when there is togetherness and people are united. We all are striving to assist in the alleviation of poverty and hunger in our communities, with many foundations and individuals focusing on this key objective. We have realised that in order to make a greater impact in the lives of the impoverished and destitute, we need to come together to support one another. We need to realise that we are merely instruments of the Almighty being used to answer others prayers and that we can achieve more if we work together.

Yesterday we managed to feed 2,500 people of the communities of Manenberg, Lotus River, Athlone, Parkwood and Lavender Hill taking the total mouths fed to date to 46,550 people. With partnerships with Ayo Technology Solutions Limite we were able to provide pots to the Lavender Hill and Manenberg communities in order to equip people of these communities to continue feeding on a regular basis. The feeding initiative would not have been successful without the support of the kitchens in the communities. These two partnerships shows that the Almighty blesses initiatives where people work together.

We would like to thank all the sponsors and the team for your continuous support, May the Almighty continue to bless you and allow us to continue this journey in assisting those in need within our communities. As it is profoundly mentioned, if we pick up one end of the stick, we also pick up the other. This shows us that together we can uplift one another and achieve much more if we are unified than working alone.
